LEARN WHERE TO DONATE CLOTHES AND FURNITURE
Start your decluttering journey with a plan. Mastering the art of organization has many benefits, such as maximizing space in small apartments
Freeing up garage space creates new opportunities for homeowners as well. Here are a few of the best places to donate clothing and furniture when jumping into spring cleaning and decluttering.
- Habitat for Humanity is a great resource for donating furniture and other large items within your local community. Many Habitat locations will even pick up furniture free of charge.
- Your neighborhood Goodwill is a go-to for clothing, books, furniture, kitchen items and more. You can use Goodwill’s store locator to find a donation center near you.
- Looking for an environmentally conscious way to donate used clothing and give back to the community? Clothing Closet repurposes gently used clothing for those who need it most. This is a great resource for supporting local youth and families. Clothing Closet even offers pick-up services for added convenience!
Enjoy a better living space while supporting a better community with these amazing organizations.
DIVIDE TASKS BY AREA OF YOUR HOME
Breaking down a large task into smaller parts makes achieving our goals more manageable. Professionals call this “microproductivity” and the super power can be applied to home organization as well. Divide your spring cleaning and decluttering by each area of your home. A decluttering roadmap might look something like “living room, bedrooms, office, garage, kicthen, and bathrooms.” Create a visual to hold yourself accountable to the task and color in each area as you mark the room “complete.”
This efficiency hack is especially good for those with limited time to clean and organize. Even if you devote one weekend day per week to decluttering you’ll soon make a dent in your to-do list.
ORGANIZE AND PRIORITIZE
One of our favorite decluttering hacks is the “four box method“. Using this method, you’ll need four boxes labeled trash, donations, keep, and relocate. As you go from room to room, place items into the corresponding box. We’d recommend giving yourself no more than sixty seconds to decide.
Closets often take the longest to sort. When it comes to clothes, use the sixty second decision rule and the “have I worn it in the last year?” rule. If the answer to the latter is “no,” toss it in the donation box and move along.
PLAN A GARAGE SALE
Make some green off your clutter by planning a garage sale. Have you ever wondered how to organize a garage sale? The same organization tips that we’ve implemented to tidy up our home can be applied to planning the best garage sale of the year.
- Clean and Sort Your Items. Make sure your gently used items are washed, dried, and sorted for sale.
- Check HOA Codes and Local Regulations. Ensure your garage sale is up to standards for a successful event.
- Pick the Right Day. Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays are prime dates for garage sales. Check to make sure your sale won’t conflict with any holidays or community events to maximize traffic.
- Get Creative! Colorful flyers and even balloons will help draw traffic to your big event.
