Where Does My Stuff Go?

One of the most common questions we get at POSH Organizing is: “What happens to my stuff after we decide it’s time to let it go?”

When we work with you in your home, nothing leaves without your permission. You are always in control. We’ll ask you several times — and sometimes in different ways — if you truly want to keep an item. This isn’t because we’re trying to push you to get rid of things. It’s because often the initial reaction is to say:
💭 “I need that.”
💭 “I might use it someday.”
💭 “I spent money on that, I can’t just give it away!”

But the truth is, the money is already spent — and now those items are just taking up valuable space in your home. We ask those questions to help you pause and reflect: Is this something I truly need or is it something I simply want to hold onto? When you choose to let them go, you’re not only freeing up space but also giving these products a chance to make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.

But when you do decide it’s time to part with something, you might wonder — what happens next?

Giving Your Items a New Purpose

We believe in mindful donation. Our goal isn’t just to toss things out and add to landfills. Whenever possible, we ensure your items go to places where they’ll be valued and used again. Here’s how:

📚 Books, Office Supplies & Craft Items

If you’re letting go of books, office supplies, or craft materials, we donate them to a local school. Teachers often dip into their own pockets to provide these supplies, so your donations help fill classrooms and after-school programs with much-needed resources.

🥫 Pantry Staples & Non-Perishables

Ever bought food you thought you’d use, only for it to sit untouched in your pantry? We take those unused, unexpired food items and donate them to a local food pantry located on a main street in West Hartford. Every time we visit — often every other week — the shelves are completely empty. Your pantry clean-out could make a real difference for a family in need.

🧴 Health, Beauty & Hair Care Products

Got a subscription box of beauty products piling up? Maybe extra shampoo, lotions, or unopened skincare products? Or perhaps you’ve accumulated multiple hair dryers, curling irons, or other hair tools? These items get donated to the YWCA program that supports young girls and women.

What About the Big Stuff?

So now the big question — what about the furniture?
What happens to all the big items that fill up your house and can’t be sold?

We work closely with a non-profit organization that will take everything that can help set up a new home for someone in need. They house veterans and the homeless, giving them a fresh start in a fully furnished space.

Here’s how it works:
✅ They require a small donation to cover their costs.
✅ They come with a moving truck and load up all your furniture and household items.

It’s truly a win-win! Your furniture stays out of the landfill and goes on to help someone rebuild their life.

What About the Rest?

If an item is beyond repair or truly not usable, we responsibly discard it. But we do everything we can to find a second life for the things leaving your home.

By choosing to donate and declutter with intention, you’re not only reclaiming space in your home — you’re giving your items a chance to help someone else. So, the next time you decide to let something go, know that it’s headed somewhere where it can do good and you’re making a positive impact in your community. ❤️
